The Year My Reflection Changed

The Year My Reflection Changed

My Personal Journey Through Menopause, Weight Loss, Breast Cancer, Healthy Aging, and Finding Myself Again

By Angela Rosen, Founder of PENELOPE & The Beauty Bar

“The greatest transformation wasn’t losing 52 pounds. It was finding the woman I’d been missing for years.”

Editor’s Note

The photographs accompanying this article were taken one year apart. They reflect my personal experience with physician-directed medical care, healthy lifestyle changes, consistent skincare, and non-invasive aesthetic treatments. Every person’s journey is different, and individual results will vary.

The Year My Reflection Changed

There are very few photographs I ever imagined sharing publicly.

For more than 30 years, I’ve devoted my career to helping other people feel beautiful and confident. I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most respected brands in the beauty industry, collaborating with skincare companies throughout Europe and South Korea, and evaluating advanced aesthetic technologies from around the world. Today, as the founder of PENELOPE & The Beauty Bar inside Seattle’s historic Fairmont Olympic Hotel, my passion is helping people age beautifully—not by changing who they are, but by helping them become the healthiest version of themselves.

Ironically, after spending decades helping others, I found myself facing one of the greatest personal challenges of my own life.

These photographs were taken exactly one year apart.

There was no surgery.

No facelift.

No fillers.

My results are the combination of losing 52 pounds with Zepbound, combined with XERF radiofrequency treatments, LYMA Laser, microcurrent, professional facial sculpting massage, regular facials, quality skincare, healthy nutrition, collagen supplementation, and a commitment to consistency every single day.

There wasn’t one miracle treatment.

There wasn’t one miracle product.

There was simply a decision to invest in my health.

When Your Body No Longer Feels Like Your Own

At 52 years old, life had taken me on an unexpected journey.

After going through breast cancer that wasn’t diagnosed for a couple of years, navigating menopause, thyroid disease, and several other health challenges, my body changed in ways I never imagined.

Even though I was eating organic foods, exercising regularly, and making healthy choices, I continued to gain weight.

Like so many women entering menopause, I kept asking myself the same question:

“What am I doing wrong?”

The answer was…

Nothing.

Sometimes our bodies change despite our very best efforts.

Sometimes hormones, illness, stress, and life simply rewrite the rules.

For me, the weight wasn’t just about appearance.

It affected how I felt every day.

It affected my confidence.

It affected my energy.

It affected how I looked in the mirror.

Eventually, I realized I wasn’t trying to become someone different.

I simply wanted to feel like myself again.

“The goal wasn’t to look younger. The goal was to feel like myself again.”

Choosing Health First

After working closely with my physicians, I began taking Zepbound.

For me, it wasn’t about chasing a number on the scale.

It was about improving my health after years of feeling like my body was working against me.

Slowly…

The weight began coming off.

Over time, I lost 52 pounds.

I had more energy.

I slept better.

I felt stronger.

I smiled more.

Most importantly, I began recognizing myself again.

But then I noticed another change.

My face looked different.

Understanding “Ozempic Face”

One of the questions I receive most often is about what people commonly call “Ozempic face.”

Although the name has become popular, it isn’t unique to Ozempic or Zepbound.

Whenever we lose a significant amount of weight—whether through GLP-1 medications, surgery, or lifestyle changes—we lose fat throughout our bodies, including our faces.

For women over fifty, menopause naturally reduces collagen production at the same time.

Together, those changes can affect facial volume and skin firmness.

As someone who has spent decades studying skincare, I knew my next priority wasn’t trying to look younger.

It was supporting healthy collagen.

Why We Chose XERF

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to experience many aesthetic devices.

Some were impressive.

Others simply weren’t right for our practice.

Ironically, I wasn’t looking to purchase another machine.

Medical aesthetic technology is a significant investment, and PENELOPE & The Beauty Bar already offers multiple advanced treatment platforms.

Adding another one wasn’t a decision I took lightly.

Then I experienced XERF.

The improvements weren’t dramatic overnight.

They were gradual.

Natural.

Elegant.

Week after week, I noticed healthier-looking skin.

Improved firmness.

Better definition.

A more sculpted jawline.

The best compliment I received wasn’t that I looked younger.

People simply told me I looked healthy.

That meant everything.

“Beautiful skin isn’t created by one treatment. It’s created by hundreds of small decisions made consistently over time.”

My Daily Commitment to Healthy Aging

People ask me almost every day what I actually did.

The answer isn’t glamorous.

It was consistency.

Every day I focused on:

 Working closely with my physicians

 Prioritizing protein

 Drinking my daily smoothie

 Staying hydrated

Taking collagen supplements I personally enjoy

 Wearing sunscreen every day

 Following a consistent skincare routine

 Receiving professional facials

 Using the LYMA Laser

 Incorporating microcurrent

 Facial sculpting massage

 XERF treatments

No one treatment created these results.

The combination—and the consistency—made the difference.

What I Learned

If I could share anything with another woman going through a similar journey, it would be this:

  • Give yourself grace.
  • Menopause changes your body—but it doesn’t define you.
  • Health is more important than perfection.
  • Consistency always wins.
  • Don’t chase every trend.
  • Find providers you trust.
  • Invest in your health before your appearance.
  • Healthy skin starts from within.

“At 52, I don’t want to look 30. I want to look healthy, vibrant, and like the best version of myself.”

Why We Offer XERF at PENELOPE & The Beauty Bar

Every technology we bring into our practice has to earn its place.

We don’t purchase equipment simply because it’s new.

We invest in treatments we believe in because we’ve experienced them ourselves, we’ve studied the science behind them, and we believe they can benefit the right patients.

At PENELOPE & The Beauty Bar, our philosophy is simple: beautiful skin is created through education, personalized care, healthy habits, and thoughtfully selected treatments—not quick fixes.

If you’re navigating menopause, thyroid changes, significant weight loss, or simply have questions about your skin, we’d love to help you understand your options.

A Final Thought

When I look at these photographs today, I don’t simply see a different face.

I see resilience.

I see healing.

I see gratitude.

Most importantly…

I see myself again.

If sharing my story helps even one person feel hopeful about their own journey, then every bit of vulnerability was worth it.
